Praa Sands: marine-grade doors for a beach that draws the weather straight in

By Cornwall Composite Doors · 25 July 1969 · 4 min read

Praa Sands' beachfront homes look straight out over open water, and the doors on them need to be specified for that exposure without compromise.

A beach with very little between it and the properties above

Praa Sands is a wide, open beach with relatively modest development set close behind it, meaning many TR20 properties here have a genuinely unbroken line of exposure to weather coming straight off Mount's Bay. Unlike a harbour village where buildings shelter each other, Praa Sands' more spread-out layout means individual properties often face wind and salt spray with very little protection from neighbouring buildings.

What that means for door specification

Given the openness of the setting, we specify marine-grade hardware — stainless hinges, letterplates and lock components — along with drained sills as standard on every door we fit in Praa Sands, without needing to distinguish between properties closer to and further from the beach the way we might in a larger, more varied town. The exposure here is fairly consistent across the whole settlement.

Sand and grit as an added factor

As with other beachfront villages on this coast, wind-blown sand from Praa Sands beach can work into door hardware over time, adding a mild abrasive element to standard salt-air corrosion. Sealed stainless components resist this far better than the mixed hardware found on older doors, which is part of why we don't compromise on specification here even for smaller, simpler properties.

Colour and style choices

Grey, Chartwell Green and cream are all popular in Praa Sands, generally chosen to complement the render finishes common on the newer bungalow and chalet-style properties that make up much of the settlement. We keep styling straightforward and coastal-appropriate rather than overly ornate, matching the relaxed, unfussy character of the village.
