Penzance doors: engineered for Mount's Bay, styled for Chapel Street
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 24 December 1969 · 4 min read
Penzance's exposed south-coast position and its Georgian Chapel Street conservation area both shape what a good front door needs to do here.
A town of two very different door challenges
Penzance covers a wide area across TR18, TR19 and TR20, from the Georgian and Regency townhouses of Chapel Street — one of the best-preserved historic streets in Cornwall — to more recent estate housing further from the seafront. Properties along the promenade and around Mount's Bay face genuinely exposed south-coast weather, with wind-driven rain and salt spray a regular feature of winter storms, while streets further inland deal with more ordinary Cornish weather.
Chapel Street and the conservation area
Chapel Street's Georgian and Regency frontages sit within a conservation area, and getting a door right here means matching period proportions closely — six-panel designs with fanlights or sidelights where the original opening allows, in black, navy or a deep heritage colour, with polished brass or antique black furniture. A composite door built to these proportions gives the correct historic appearance without the annual repainting a genuine period timber door would need.
Coping with Mount's Bay weather
Properties directly on the promenade or close to Mount's Bay take a serious amount of wind-driven rain and salt spray during south-easterly storms, which is one of the more exposed wind directions on this part of the coast. We fit marine-grade stainless hardware and drained thresholds as standard on anything within a street or two of the seafront here.
Estate housing further from the centre
Away from the historic centre, Penzance's estate housing has more conventional needs — warmth, security and a straightforward, contemporary look. Anthracite grey and black are the most popular choices in these areas, matching the grey and black window frames common on housing built over the last couple of decades.
