Multi-Point Locking Explained

Short answer
A multipoint lock engages several bolts along the door edge simultaneously when the handle is lifted and key turned, usually combining hooks, rollers and a deadbolt. This spreads locking force along the whole frame rather than one point, making the door far harder to force open.
Multipoint locking is standard on composite doors, but not all systems are equal. This guide explains how the mechanism works, what the different bolt types do, and how to judge quality.
How the mechanism works
Inside the door edge sits a gearbox connected to the handle spindle and cylinder. Lifting the handle drives a series of bolts out of the door edge and into keeps fixed to the frame, typically at three to five points from top to bottom. Turning the key then usually engages the deadbolt for full security.
This is different to a traditional single-point mortice lock, which relies on one bolt resisting the entire force of an attempted forced entry. Spreading the load across multiple points along the frame makes it much harder to lever or kick the door out of its keep.
Hooks, rollers and deadbolts
Hook bolts curl into a keep and resist being pulled straight out, making them effective against levering attacks at the frame edge. Roller bolts (sometimes called cams) engage into a strike plate and add resistance to twisting forces. The deadbolt, engaged by the key, is the main resistance to drilling and physical attack.

Does more locking points mean more secure?
Not necessarily. A five-point system with poorly hardened bolts and a cheap keep can be weaker than a well-engineered three-point system with hardened steel components and deep keeps fixed into the frame reinforcement. The gearbox brand, bolt hardening and keep fixing matter more than the raw count advertised.
Common gearbox and hardware brands
Reputable composite door manufacturers such as Endurance and Solidor typically fit branded gearboxes from established UK lock manufacturers, tested as part of the door's PAS 24 certification. Ask your installer which gearbox brand is used and whether it forms part of the door's tested and certified specification, not fitted as an afterthought.

How many locking points does a composite door need?
There's no fixed legal minimum, but most quality composite doors use three to five locking points. What matters more than the number is that the whole system, including the cylinder, has been tested together to PAS 24, rather than the points being an isolated selling figure.
What happens if a multipoint lock gearbox fails?
If the gearbox fails, the handle may drop, spin freely, or the bolts may not retract, effectively locking you out or in. This needs a locksmith or door specialist to replace the gearbox; it's rarely a quick DIY fix given the door needs to come off in some cases.
Can I upgrade my existing door's locking system?
In many cases yes, if the door and frame are in good condition, a specialist can replace the gearbox and cylinder with a higher security combination. However, if the frame keeps or fixings are worn, a full door replacement is often more cost-effective and secure long-term.
