How composite stable doors work
The two halves of a composite stable door are hinged independently to the frame, meeting at a horizontal split usually around 1050 mm from the threshold (waist height on most adults). A concealed shoot-bolt on the inside face of the top half throws vertically into the bottom half — when engaged, the two halves are mechanically locked and behave as one. A standard multi-point lock on the outer stile then throws its hooks into the frame from the top-half stile, securing the whole door as a single unit against forced entry.
Where stable doors work in Cornish homes
Farmhouse kitchen back doors are the classic installation — the top half open in summer for ventilation while children and pets stay contained. Security specification
A locked composite stable door achieves identical security specification to any other composite door style: PAS24:2022, 3-star anti-snap cylinder, multi-point locking. The critical detail is that the shoot-bolt between halves must be engaged for the multi-point lock to function — this is enforced mechanically, so the door cannot accidentally be locked in split-open configuration.
Weather resistance
The horizontal split between halves carries a substantial weather seal — an overlapping meeting-rail profile with a dual EPDM gasket that compresses closed under the shoot-bolt tension. This achieves weather-tightness in Cornwall's driving rain that matches a solid single-leaf door. On exposed frontages we specify enhanced weather-bar profiles at the threshold and drip-mould at the head.

Sage green, Chartwell Green, aged cream, deep red, oak-effect and Duck-Egg blue are the traditional stable-door palette. Because stable doors are usually specified on rural properties in traditional or cottage contexts, dark greens and rich creams dominate our installs.
Glazing options
The top half of a stable door typically carries either two square glazed panes side-by-side or a single wide horizontal top-light. The lower half is almost always solid. Small-pane leaded, Georgian-bar and cottage-arrangement decorative units are the most-popular glazing choices; obscure and sandblasted units work where the door faces public access.
Hardware
Antique black or aged brass hardware is standard on stable installations. Ring-pull handles, thumb-latches and long strap-hinge decorative overlays give the authentic country-house reading. On the inside face, the shoot-bolt handle is usually specified in matching finish. Letterplates are almost never fitted on stable configurations (they compromise the split-line weather seal); a separate wall-mounted letterbox is the alternative.
Frames
Matching-colour uPVC or aluminium frames sized to the aperture, with reinforced hinge positions at the top of the top half, the bottom of the top half (carrying additional weight from the shoot-bolt tension), and the top and bottom of the lower half. This four-hinge arrangement per side is critical to stable-door longevity.
Manufacturing lead-times
Stable composite doors are always made to individual order — the split configuration is not held as stock. Lead-times run 5 to 7 weeks for standard colours, adding 1 to 2 weeks over a single-leaf door.
Maintenance
Warm soapy water twice a year on the slab. Once a year, light PTFE spray on the shoot-bolt mechanism, the two additional hinges and the multi-point lock keeps. That's the entire maintenance schedule.
