Short answer

A U-value measures the rate of heat transfer through a material, expressed in watts per square metre per degree Kelvin (W/m²K). The lower the number, the better the insulation. Most composite doorsets score between 1.0 and 1.8 W/m²K, well within the 1.8 W/m²K Part L limiting standard for replacement doors.

U-values appear on nearly every door and window spec sheet, but the number itself doesn't mean much without context. Here's a straightforward explanation of what it measures and how to use it when comparing doors.

What a U-value actually measures

A U-value measures how much heat energy passes through one square metre of a material for every degree of temperature difference between inside and outside, measured in W/m²K. It covers the whole doorset — panel, frame, and glazing — not just the material the door is made from, which is why two doors made of the same material can have different U-values.

Why lower is better

A lower U-value means less heat escapes through the door for a given temperature difference, so the door is doing a better job of keeping warmth inside. A door rated at 1.2 W/m²K loses heat more slowly than one rated at 1.8 W/m²K under the same conditions.

Building Regulations and Part L

In England, Building Regulations Part L sets a limiting standard of 1.8 W/m²K for replacement doors, meaning any new door installed in an existing home should meet this figure as a minimum. Most modern composite doorsets comfortably beat this standard, often achieving 1.4 W/m²K or lower.

How U-values relate to SAP and EPC

When a home's energy performance is assessed under SAP (the Standard Assessment Procedure) for an EPC, the U-value of external doors is one of many inputs used to calculate the overall heat loss of the property. A single door's U-value has a small but real effect on the total figure.

What figure to look for when buying

As a simple guide when comparing doors.

  • 1.8 W/m²K: minimum standard, meets Part L but not the most efficient available
  • 1.4–1.6 W/m²K: solid, typical performance for a good composite doorset
  • 1.0–1.3 W/m²K: high-performance specification, often with triple glazing
  • Always ask whether the figure quoted is for the doorset or the panel alone

Frequently asked questions

Is a U-value the same as an R-value?

No, they're related but inverse. R-value measures resistance to heat flow (higher is better), while U-value measures the rate of heat transfer (lower is better). UK door and window specifications almost always use U-value.

Does the U-value include the frame?

It should, if quoted correctly for the whole doorset. Some suppliers quote a panel-only figure, which looks better than the true installed performance, so it's worth asking specifically whether the frame and glazing are included.

What U-value do Building Regulations require?

For replacement doors in existing homes in England, Part L sets a limiting standard of 1.8 W/m²K. New-build regulations can differ and are generally stricter, so check the specific requirement for your project.

Can I measure a door's U-value myself?

Not practically at home — U-values are calculated in laboratory conditions or using standardised calculation methods for the whole doorset. Rely on the manufacturer's certified figures rather than trying to estimate it yourself.
