Short answer
A U-value measures the rate of heat transfer through a material, expressed in watts per square metre per degree Kelvin (W/m²K). The lower the number, the better the insulation. Most composite doorsets score between 1.0 and 1.8 W/m²K, well within the 1.8 W/m²K Part L limiting standard for replacement doors.

What a U-value actually measures
A U-value measures how much heat energy passes through one square metre of a material for every degree of temperature difference between inside and outside, measured in W/m²K. It covers the whole doorset — panel, frame, and glazing — not just the material the door is made from, which is why two doors made of the same material can have different U-values.
Why lower is better
A lower U-value means less heat escapes through the door for a given temperature difference, so the door is doing a better job of keeping warmth inside. A door rated at 1.2 W/m²K loses heat more slowly than one rated at 1.8 W/m²K under the same conditions.

In England, Building Regulations Part L sets a limiting standard of 1.8 W/m²K for replacement doors, meaning any new door installed in an existing home should meet this figure as a minimum. Most modern composite doorsets comfortably beat this standard, often achieving 1.4 W/m²K or lower.
