What makes a door 'coastal specification'
Three upgrades over standard composite specification. First, all external hardware — handles, letterplates, numerals, hinges — is upgraded to marine-grade 316 stainless steel rather than 304. 316 contains added molybdenum that resists chloride pitting; standard 304 begins to develop pit corrosion in salt-laden air within 5 to 10 years. Second, the weather-bar profile at the threshold is extended and the drip-mould at the head is upsized to shed horizontal driven rain. Third, all internal seals (compression gaskets, brush-pile seals) are upgraded to marine-suitable EPDM that resists UV degradation.
Cornish coastal exposure zones
The south coast (from Plymouth to Land's End via Fowey, Mevagissey, Falmouth, Helston, Penzance) is exposed to Atlantic weather funneled through the English Channel. The north coast (from Bude to Land's End via Boscastle, Padstow, Newquay, St Ives) faces direct Atlantic weather with often no fetch modification. Both are demanding environments, but the north coast is significantly more demanding on the very-exposed sections — Boscastle, Trebarwith Strand, Chapel Porth, Portreath. We match specification to the specific site.
Salt-air corrosion — why 316 stainless matters
Salt-laden air carries chloride ions that attack stainless steel through pitting corrosion — microscopic pits form on the surface where the passive chromium-oxide layer breaks down. Grade 304 stainless (the standard specification on inland installations) is vulnerable to pitting within 5 to 10 years on coastal sites. Grade 316 adds 2-3% molybdenum, which stabilises the passive layer and provides genuine long-term corrosion resistance. The cost difference is modest — around £30 to £50 per door on hardware — and the lifespan difference is decades.
Recommended coastal colours
Duck-egg blue, painted white, sage green, aged cream and Chartwell Green are the traditional coastal Cornish palette. Anthracite Grey and matte black work on architect-designed contemporary coastal homes. Bright oranges, reds and yellows fade faster in south-facing coastal positions and are usually not recommended for exposed sites.
Glazing for coastal properties
Glazing on coastal doors is often larger than on inland equivalents — the sea view or the maritime light is part of what the property offers, and homeowners often want to bring that light into the hallway. Full-height side-lights and top-lights are common on coastal installations. All glass is toughened to BS 6206 Class A and specified with maritime-appropriate low-E coatings on the sealed unit inner leaves.
Frame specification
Aluminium frames are preferred over uPVC on coastal installations — better long-term paint retention under UV exposure, and aluminium's slight flexibility handles frame movement in high winds better than the more rigid uPVC. Frames are always finished in matching colour with marine-grade paint systems.
Hardware finishes
316 stainless is the default; alternatives are marine-grade brass (with a marine-suitable lacquer) or powder-coated aluminium in matching-colour finish. Antique black hardware for cottage-style coastal installations is available but requires more frequent maintenance in coastal air than 316 stainless.
Installation timing on exposed sites
Very exposed cliff-top installations are scheduled around weather forecasts — sustained winds above 40 mph or driven horizontal rain make removal of the existing door and precise re-hanging of the new frame difficult. We aim to complete installation between weather fronts on exposed sites, which occasionally means rescheduling at short notice.

Our 10-year warranty applies as standard to coastal installations, but we advise homeowners on marine-suitable maintenance practice (see below) to ensure the hardware finish is preserved through the warranty period.
Coastal maintenance
Coastal composite doors benefit from more frequent cleaning than inland equivalents. We recommend a monthly rinse with fresh water on any hardware within 500 m of the coast — salt residue accumulates on stainless surfaces and, while it will not corrode 316 stainless, it can dull the finish visually. Twice-yearly full wash with warm soapy water on the slab. Annual PTFE lubrication of hinges and lock keeps.
