St Agnes: Doors That Can Take Trevaunance Cove's Salt Air

By Cornwall Composite Doors · 29 September 1969 · 4 min read

From Wheal Coates to the cliffside terraces above Trevaunance Cove, TR5 properties need marine-grade specification, not just a nice colour.

A mining village on the edge of a cliff

St Agnes grew up around tin and copper mining, and you can still see it in the terraced miners' cottages that climb the hill from Trevaunance Cove up towards St Agnes Beacon. Those terraces are tightly packed and often quite exposed, since the village sits directly above the coast with little in the way of shelter. Doors here take a battering from salt-laden gusts pretty much year-round, and we see a lot of failed timber doors with rusted hinges and swollen bottom rails on our first visits.

What we specify differently for St Agnes

Every install within a couple of miles of Trevaunance Cove gets stainless steel hinges, hinges and fixings as standard, along with a drained threshold detail that lets any wind-driven rain escape rather than pool against the sill. It's a small difference in the spec sheet but it's the reason a door here still closes properly in year eight rather than needing adjustment in year two.

Colour choices that suit the Beacon's landscape

St Agnes Beacon and the surrounding mining landscape are a muted palette of gorse, granite and heather, and most customers here end up choosing colours that sit within that — chartwell green, anthracite grey and the darker heritage blues are consistently our top sellers in this postcode, rather than bright white which can look stark against the stone terraces.

Working around narrow lanes and steep access

Several of the older terraces above the cove have very limited vehicle access, so our surveyor will flag at the first visit if we need to hand-carry materials any distance, which occasionally affects the day we can offer for fitting rather than the price.
