Perranporth: a stress-test town for any front door
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 13 December 1969 · 4 min read
Between sand-blasted salt air off Perran Sands and strong sun, Perranporth is one of the harder places in Cornwall for a door to hold its finish.
A surf town with genuinely tough conditions
Perranporth sits right on the edge of Perran Sands, one of the longest beaches on the north coast, and the combination of a wide open beach, prevailing onshore wind and strong summer sun makes it one of the toughest testing grounds for a front door anywhere on our patch. TR6 properties range from older cottages near Chapel Rock and the town centre to more recent housing spreading back from the beach, and almost all of them get a regular dose of salt-laden, sand-carrying wind.
Sand as an abrasive, not just a nuisance
Perranporth's beach means wind-blown sand is a genuine factor in how a door wears, not just an inconvenience to sweep off the step. Sand can work its way into hinges and locking mechanisms and act as an abrasive over years of exposure, gradually wearing standard hardware. We fit sealed, stainless components as standard here, which resist this far better than the mixed-metal hardware found on older doors.
UV and colour fastness
Perranporth also gets a lot of direct, unobstructed sun given its open beachfront position, and colour fastness matters more here than in more sheltered towns. Every composite door we install carries a 10-year colour-fastness guarantee, which is particularly relevant in a town where UV exposure is genuinely higher than average for this coastline.
What suits the town
Anthracite grey and black are popular on the newer housing towards the back of town, while Chartwell Green and cream suit the older cottages nearer Chapel Rock and the town centre. Given the sun exposure, we do point out to customers that darker colours will run slightly warmer on the hottest days here, though this has no effect on the door's structural performance.
