Ruan Minor: a clifftop Lizard village where marine-grade specification is non-negotiable

By Cornwall Composite Doors · 14 August 1969 · 4 min read

Ruan Minor's position near Kennack Sands and Cadgwith on the Lizard peninsula means every door here needs a genuinely coastal-rated specification.

A quiet village on an exposed peninsula

Ruan Minor is a small, quiet village on the Lizard peninsula, close to Kennack Sands and Cadgwith, and like most of the Lizard it sits on ground with very little shelter from Atlantic weather systems moving in off the sea. TR12 properties here are a mix of stone cottages and more recent bungalow-style housing, spread out rather than densely packed, which means individual properties often face wind from multiple directions rather than being sheltered by neighbouring buildings.

Why we don't offer a 'basic' specification here

Given the Lizard's exposure levels, we don't really offer a standard, non-coastal specification in Ruan Minor the way we might in an inland village — stainless steel hardware, a reinforced hinge side and a properly drained threshold are the baseline for every door we fit here, regardless of the specific property's aspect. It's simply not worth the risk of premature hardware failure to cut corners on a peninsula that gets this much weather.

What fails without the right specification

We've seen standard hardware corrode within just a few years on Ruan Minor properties, particularly hinges and multi-point lock components that weren't rated for this level of salt exposure. A properly specified composite door with marine-grade fittings avoids this almost entirely, and it's the single biggest factor in whether a door here lasts the full length of its guarantee comfortably or starts causing problems early.

Simple, robust styling to suit the village

Ruan Minor's cottages and bungalows suit straightforward, unfussy composite door styles — Chartwell Green, black and anthracite grey are the most common choices, without the more ornate detailing you might see on a town-centre period property. The priority here is genuinely robust performance first, aesthetics second.
