Pendeen: composite doors for exposed clifftop mining cottages

By Cornwall Composite Doors · 23 December 1969 · 4 min read

Pendeen's cottages, built for mine workers on an exposed stretch of the north coast near Geevor and Levant, need a door engineered for real weather.

A mining village on an unsheltered coastline

Pendeen grew up to house the workers of Geevor and Levant mines, and its terraced cottages sit close to the cliff edge on one of the most exposed parts of the Cornish north coast, with almost nothing between the village and the open Atlantic. TR19 housing here is predominantly granite and stone terraces, built solidly to survive the same weather the mine workings themselves had to withstand, but front doors are a different matter — even the sturdiest stone terrace has a door that's only as good as its last replacement.

Why standard doors don't last on this stretch

We see doors fail faster in Pendeen than in almost any other village on our books that isn't directly on a harbour. Constant, unbroken wind off the Atlantic combined with driving rain means standard hardware corrodes early and seals wear through faster than the manufacturer's rated lifespan. A composite door with stainless steel hinges, a reinforced hinge side and a properly drained threshold is close to essential here rather than a premium option.

Keeping the mining-cottage character

Pendeen's terraces have a strong, simple architectural character that a heritage-style composite door respects well — plain panelled designs in Chartwell Green, black or anthracite grey, with chrome or pewter furniture, are what we fit most often. We steer away from ornate styling here; the cottages were built plainly and functionally, and the door should match that.

Nearby villages on the same exposed stretch

Pendeen sits close to St Just and Zennor, both of which share the same unsheltered north-coast conditions, and we cover all three on the same rounds, applying the same coastal-grade specification as standard rather than treating any of them as a lesser case.
