Zennor: A Marine-Grade Door for One of Cornwall's Most Exposed Villages
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 25 September 1969 · 4 min read
TR26's scattered granite cottages face the Atlantic head-on between St Ives and Pendeen — nothing but a properly sealed composite copes here.
A tiny village facing the open Atlantic
Zennor is one of the smallest and most exposed settlements we work in, a scattering of granite cottages between St Ives and Pendeen with the Atlantic directly in front and moorland behind. There's very little in the way of tree cover or shelter from neighbouring buildings, and the weather here reflects that — wind and driving rain arrive with almost nothing to slow them down first.
Granite built for the weather, doors that weren't
Zennor's cottages themselves are built thick-walled and low to the ground, clearly designed by people who understood this exposure centuries ago. The doors fitted to many of them over the decades since, by contrast, were never specified for this level of weather, and it shows — we regularly see swollen timber, rusted ironmongery and gaps that let daylight through around the frame on our first visits here.
Marine-grade fixings, no exceptions
Every install we do in Zennor uses stainless-steel fixings and a fully drained threshold as standard, without exception. There's no version of a Zennor property that counts as sheltered enough to relax that specification, and we're clear about that with customers from the first conversation rather than treating it as an optional extra.
Keeping the granite character intact
Given the age and character of Zennor's cottages, heritage-style panelled composite doors in muted, natural colours — deep greens, greys and blues — sit far better against the granite than anything bright or modern, and that's consistently what we recommend and what customers here choose.
