Padstow: doors that need to look authentic and outlast the estuary weather
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 30 August 1969 · 4 min read
Padstow's mix of working fishermen's cottages and smart second homes on the Camel Estuary demands a door that reads genuine and lasts decades.
A harbour town under constant scrutiny
Padstow's compact PL28 harbour is one of the most visited spots in Cornwall, and the cottages that line it — many still owned by working fishing families alongside a growing number of second homes — are seen by more passers-by in a summer than most streets see in a decade. That level of exposure to public view raises the bar on how a front door needs to look, quite apart from how well it needs to perform against the Camel Estuary's damp, salty air.
Estuary conditions are their own challenge
Padstow doesn't face the open Atlantic directly, but the Camel Estuary brings its own combination of near-constant humidity, tidal salt exposure and driving rain funnelled up the river valley. Timber doors here tend to swell rather than crack, since the problem is sustained damp rather than direct storm battering, while older uPVC doors often show cloudy, degraded glazed units from years of condensation cycling in the humid air.
Getting the look right for a conservation setting
Much of central Padstow sits within a conservation area, and cottages here need a door that reads as authentic rather than a modern retrofit. Cottage-panel composite doors in Chartwell Green, cream or black, with chrome or pewter furniture, are what we fit most often, and they hold up to scrutiny from both the council and the passing foot traffic that Padstow gets in huge numbers through the summer.
Second homes and the maintenance question
A growing number of Padstow's harbourside properties are second homes, occupied only part of the year, which makes a low-maintenance door even more valuable — nobody wants to arrive for a week's stay to find a swollen door or peeling paint. Composite removes that concern almost entirely, holding its finish and function whether the property is used every week or every few months.
