Composite Doors in Bude: Specified for the North Cornwall Coast
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 9 July 1969 · 4 min read
Bude's Atlantic-facing position is one of the harshest in Cornwall for a front door — here's what we change on every install here and why.
Why Bude is one of our toughest specifications
Bude faces the Atlantic with almost nothing to break the wind before it arrives, and Summerleaze, Widemouth and the properties strung along the coast road take the full force of it. We treat every survey here as a coastal-exposure job by default rather than the exception — stainless steel hinges and fixings throughout, an uprated triple-brush weatherseal, and a threshold detailed to drain rather than trap water.
The difference between a coastal door and an inland one
A door fitted three streets back from the seafront in Bude still needs a better specification than the same door fitted in, say, Launceston. Salt travels a long way on wind, and UV exposure off open water is more intense than most people expect. That's why the Endurance colours we fit carry a 10-year colour-fastness guarantee bonded through the GRP skin rather than a surface paint that would chalk and fade within a couple of Cornish summers.
Widemouth, Poughill and Stratton — different housing, same exposure
Bude's wider catchment includes everything from clifftop bungalows at Widemouth to older stone cottages in Poughill and Stratton, and the exposure risk doesn't really drop off with distance from the beach in this part of Cornwall — the whole area sits in the path of the same weather systems. We spec every one of these the same way: marine-grade hardware as standard, not as an upgrade.
What holds up and what doesn't in Bude
We've replaced enough failed timber and cheap uPVC doors along this stretch to know what doesn't last: painted softwood swells and rots at the bottom rail within a few winters, and thin uPVC frames flex and let water track in around the glazing. A composite doorset with a solid timber or foam core doesn't have either of those weak points, which is why it's the specification we'd genuinely recommend rather than just sell.
