Overview

A snapped key is almost always a symptom of a stiff lock that was ignored. The good news: with tweezers, a broken-key extractor or a locksmith's help, the barrel usually doesn't need drilling.

Symptoms

  • Half the key is in your hand, half in the lock.
  • Door locked or unlocked with the key stuck.

Common causes

  • Cylinder was stiff and needed excess force.
  • Worn or copied-of-a-copy key.
  • Attempted lock snapping (check the cylinder face).

When to call a professional

  • Key is flush with or below the cylinder face.
  • You can see any sign of tampering.
  • You're locked out.

Prevention

  • Never force a key - a stiff lock is a warning.
  • Replace worn keys before they snap.
  • Service the lock annually.
