Composite Door Peeling

Composite door peeling? That's a paint failure - genuine GRP skins don't peel. Here's what to do.

Written by Cornwall Composite DoorsReviewed by Cornwall Composite Doors installersLast updated July 20262 minute read

Overview

A genuine GRP composite door skin should not peel - the colour is integral to the material. If yours is peeling, either it's a painted composite (some budget brands are), or a previous owner has painted over the GRP.

Symptoms

  • Paint or coating lifting off in patches.
  • Underlayer showing through.

Common causes

  • Painted composite door.
  • Someone painted over a GRP door.
  • Manufacturing defect (rare).

When to call a professional

  • Replacement is usually more cost-effective than trying to refinish a peeling door.

Prevention

  • Buy GRP-skinned doors, not painted composites.
