Overview
A genuine GRP composite door skin should not peel - the colour is integral to the material. If yours is peeling, either it's a painted composite (some budget brands are), or a previous owner has painted over the GRP.
Symptoms
- Paint or coating lifting off in patches.
- Underlayer showing through.
Common causes
- Painted composite door.
- Someone painted over a GRP door.
- Manufacturing defect (rare).
When to call a professional
- Replacement is usually more cost-effective than trying to refinish a peeling door.
Prevention
- Buy GRP-skinned doors, not painted composites.
