Overview

GRP composite doors are not designed to be painted - the surface is a smooth gel-coat that most paints don't bond to. If yours has been painted and is now failing, options are limited.

Symptoms

  • Flaking, bubbling or patchy paint.

Common causes

  • Paint applied over unprepared GRP.
  • Wrong paint type (household emulsion or gloss instead of specialist).

When to call a professional

  • Assessment for repaint vs replacement.

Prevention

  • Choose a factory-coloured door.
