St Day: Composite Doors for a Mining-Heritage Village
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 13 July 1969 · 4 min read
TR16's tightly packed terraces near Gwennap Pit take well to heritage-style composite doors in the colours the village is known for.
One of Cornwall's most historic mining villages
St Day was once at the heart of Cornwall's copper mining industry, and Gwennap Pit — the natural amphitheatre where John Wesley preached to huge crowds — sits just outside the village. That mining-era history shows in the housing: rows of terraced cottages built close together, many still with their original granite or rendered stone frontages, running along streets that were laid out for a much busier industrial-era population.
Why the terraces suit heritage colours
St Day's terraces have a strong, uniform character, and a door that clashes with the streetscape stands out for the wrong reasons. Grey, deep green and dark blue are consistently the most-requested colour choices we fit here, and they photograph well against the mix of granite, render and slate roofing that defines the village. Bright or pastel colours are less common simply because they read as out of step with the setting, though it remains the homeowner's choice.
Inland but still weather-exposed
St Day sits well inland from the coast, but its elevated position between Redruth and Chacewater means it still catches plenty of wind and rain. It doesn't need the marine-grade fixings we specify for cliff-top villages, but the same triple-brush seal and multi-point lock we fit everywhere makes a real difference to draughts in these older, close-set terraces.
Working within a tightly packed streetscape
Several of St Day's streets are narrow with limited parking, common to villages built up during the mining boom rather than for modern traffic. Our fitters plan deliveries and access at survey stage so the job doesn't disrupt neighbours more than necessary on the day.
