Sennen and Sennen Cove: Doors Built for the Edge of the Country
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 3 December 1969 · 4 min read
TR19's clifftop cottages near Land's End face some of the harshest weather in mainland Britain — here's what actually holds up.
The most exposed installs we do
Sennen and Sennen Cove sit at the far western tip of Cornwall, a short walk from Land's End itself, and the weather here is a different order of magnitude to almost anywhere else we work. Salt-laden south-westerlies come straight off the Atlantic with nothing to slow them down, and in a bad winter storm a front door here can take driving rain sideways for days at a time. We don't treat any Sennen job as routine — every fitting gets stainless-steel fixings and a fully drained threshold as standard, not as an upsell.
Granite cottages and holiday lets
Housing in Sennen splits fairly cleanly between old granite fishing cottages clustered near the cove and a scattering of more modern bungalows and holiday-let conversions further up the hill. On the granite cottages, a heritage-style composite door in a muted colour — chartwell green or a soft grey — sits far more comfortably than anything bright white, and it avoids the stark look that a brand new door can have against centuries-old stone. On the holiday lets, durability tends to matter more than style; owners want something that will still look presentable after a season of changeover cleaning and salt exposure with minimal upkeep from them.
Why timber genuinely doesn't survive here
We're straightforward with Sennen customers: a timber front door in this location, however well maintained, is fighting a losing battle. Salt crystallises in the grain, finishes crack within a season or two, and the constant wetting-and-drying cycle from spray warps panels faster than any repainting schedule can keep up with. Composite doesn't have grain for the salt to get into, and the factory-applied colour is sealed into the skin rather than sitting on top of it.
Fitting around Land's End's tourist season
A lot of Sennen properties are let commercially through spring and summer, so we schedule installs for shoulder-season weeks where we can, and we always leave the property secure and weathertight at the end of each working day rather than mid-fit — there's no assuming a calm evening here to finish up.
