Porthleven: a storm-famous harbour that's no place for a timber door
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 23 August 1969 · 4 min read
Porthleven's harbour is known nationally for its winter storms, and its front doors have to survive weather most towns never see.
A harbour that makes the news every winter
Porthleven's harbour has become nationally recognisable for the scale of waves that break over it during winter storms, and while that makes for dramatic photographs, it also means the properties around the harbour genuinely experience some of the harshest coastal weather conditions in Cornwall. TR13 housing close to the harbour wall, along the clock tower and up towards Loe Bar, is built to withstand this, but doors are the part of any building most vulnerable to that level of exposure.
Why we're blunt about timber here
We tell Porthleven customers plainly: a timber door on the harbourfront here is not a realistic long-term option. The direct force of wave spray during storms, combined with near-constant salt-laden wind even on calmer days, degrades softwood and standard hardware at a pace that makes annual maintenance feel like a losing battle. Composite doors, with their solid engineered core and non-porous factory finish, are the specification that actually holds up.
Hardware and threshold specification for storm exposure
Properties directly on Porthleven's harbourfront get our highest specification as standard — stainless steel hinges and hardware throughout, a fully drained, storm-rated threshold, and a heavier-duty multi-point lock rated for higher wind loading than we'd use even in many other coastal towns.
Styles that suit the town
Porthleven's mix of granite harbour buildings and later Victorian terraces suits Chartwell Green, black and cream well, usually with chrome or pewter furniture. On properties set back a street or two from the harbour, where exposure eases slightly, we can be a little more flexible on styling while keeping the same underlying build quality.
