Paul village: a quiet granite hilltop above Mousehole that deserves the same care
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 18 November 1969 · 4 min read
Paul's granite terraces sit just above Mousehole, sharing its exposure to Mount's Bay weather without quite the same crowds.
A village overlooking the bay
Paul sits on the high ground above Mousehole, with views out over Mount's Bay that its granite cottages and terraces have looked out on for centuries. TR19 properties here share a lot architecturally with Mousehole below — thick granite walls, narrow door openings, and a village character built long before modern standard sizes existed — but Paul's slightly elevated, more open position means it catches wind that the more sheltered harbour streets below don't.
Wind exposure on higher ground
Being set higher than Mousehole itself, Paul's properties often take a stronger, more direct hit from prevailing south-westerlies, even though the village is a little further from the water. That means door frames here need a good seal against wind-driven rain as much as they need protection from direct salt spray, and we specify a robust triple-brush weather seal as standard on every install in this part of the parish.
Respecting the granite
As with Mousehole, a heritage-style cottage door works far better here than a modern flush design — Chartwell Green, cream and black are the colours we fit most often, chosen to sit comfortably against granite rather than compete with it. Chrome and pewter furniture suit the setting better than brass, which tends to look too formal against the weathered stone.
A quieter alternative fitting schedule
Because Paul is smaller and quieter than Mousehole, access for fitting is generally more straightforward, and we often combine surveys here with visits to Mousehole and Newlyn on the same trip.
