Par: a beachfront village where a composite door does real, visible work
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 9 November 1969 · 4 min read
Par's proximity to Par Beach and the old docks means salt and blown sand are constant factors in how long a front door lasts.
An industrial past, a beachfront present
Par grew up around its docks and the china-clay trade, and that industrial layout still shapes the village today — terraced housing close to the old works, with newer development spreading out towards Par Beach itself. PL24 properties closest to the beach face a genuine combination of salt spray and wind-blown sand, both of which are hard on standard-grade door hardware and finishes over time.
Sand as well as salt
Par is one of the few spots on this coast where blown sand is as much of a factor as salt spray — beachfront gardens here regularly need clearing after a windy spell, and that same sand works its way into door thresholds and hardware if it isn't specified to cope. We fit drained sills and stainless fixings as standard on Par's beachfront properties for exactly this reason, since a standard threshold can silt up and jam over time.
Terraced housing further from the beach
Further back towards the village centre and the old docks, exposure drops off noticeably, and the driving factor for most homeowners there is warmth and security rather than marine-grade hardware. Older terraces here often still have their original 1960s or 70s front doors, and the thermal difference from fitting a modern composite doorset is one of the most noticeable upgrades a homeowner in this part of Par will make.
Colour choices
Grey and Chartwell Green skins are the most popular picks in Par, working well against both the older terraced brick and the more recent render used on beachfront infill housing. Black also does well on the more contemporary properties closer to the beach.
