Mullion Cove: doors for one of the most exposed harbourfronts in Cornwall

By Cornwall Composite Doors · 21 July 1969 · 4 min read

Mullion Cove's tiny cluster of harbourside properties face the open Atlantic almost unshielded, which shapes every part of the door specification here.

A small, dramatically exposed harbour

Mullion Cove is a genuine outlier even by Cornish coastal standards — a handful of cottages and the harbourmaster's buildings sit right at the water's edge with the harbour wall as the only real shelter from the open Atlantic. TR12 properties here are mostly older stone-built cottages, several within or close to National Trust land, and the scale of the place means every door replacement is treated individually rather than as a standard job off a template.

What ordinary specifications can't cope with

We've seen standard-grade uPVC and softwood doors fail here in a fraction of the time they'd last even in nearby Mullion village. Salt-laden spray reaches properties directly off breaking waves during winter storms, not just as airborne mist, and that level of direct water contact needs a doorset engineered specifically for it — full-length reinforcement on the hinge side, stainless steel fixings throughout, and a drained, storm-rated threshold rather than a standard low-level sill.

Respecting the cottages' character

Despite the extreme exposure, most of Mullion Cove's cottages are modest, characterful stone buildings rather than grand properties, and a heavy, oversized modern door would look wrong on them. We usually specify a traditional cottage-panel composite door in Chartwell Green, cream or black, keeping the proportions in line with the original openings rather than trying to make a statement that doesn't suit the setting.

Access and fitting logistics

Mullion Cove's narrow lanes and limited parking mean fitting days here need more planning than a typical village install — we always confirm access and any National Trust or landowner considerations at survey stage, well before a fitting date is booked, to avoid delays on the day.
