Coverack: A Door Specification for the Lizard's Full Exposure

By Cornwall Composite Doors · 10 December 1969 · 4 min read

Coverack's harbourside cottages take some of the harshest weather on the Lizard peninsula — here's the specification that actually copes.

One of the most exposed harbour villages on the Lizard

Coverack sits directly on the water on the eastern side of the Lizard peninsula, and its harbourside cottages take spray and wind with very little shelter. This is genuinely one of the more demanding installs we do in Cornwall — not because the work is different in principle, but because the margin for a weak seal or the wrong fixing is much smaller here than in a sheltered inland village.

Marine hardware as the default, not the upgrade

Every Coverack installation gets stainless steel hinges, screws and multipoint mechanism components as standard — there's no lesser specification we'd offer here, because a standard fixing kit would corrode within a few years in this environment. The threshold is detailed with a full drainage path so wind-driven rain doesn't sit against the frame.

Cottage character on a working harbour

Coverack's cottages are working fishing-village stock — small-windowed, stone or rendered, built low against the wind. Cottage-style composite doors with a small glazed panel suit this housing far better than anything larger or more contemporary, and heritage colours like Duck Egg Blue and Chartwell Green feel genuinely at home here rather than imposed.

What a Coverack survey actually covers

Given the exposure, we spend longer than usual at survey stage assessing wind direction, existing weather damage and drainage — it's worth getting right first time on a property that will see this much weather over a 10-year guarantee period.
