A moving frame is a fixing problem, not a door problem

It's easy to assume a wobbly frame means something's wrong with the door itself, but the slab is almost never the cause. The frame is fixed into the surrounding opening at a series of points, typically every 150–200mm up each jamb and across the head, and each of those fixings needs to run through a solid packer into sound masonry. If even a few of those points are missing, under-driven, or seated into something soft, the whole frame can flex under the force of a slammed door.

This matters because a flexing frame doesn't just feel unsatisfying — it actively works the multi-point lock's keeps out of alignment over time, cracks the external sealant joint, and eventually loosens the fixings that were sound to begin with, turning a small problem into a bigger one.

How to confirm it's actually the frame

Push firmly with the flat of your hand on the frame directly next to each hinge and near the keeps, with the door open. There should be no perceptible movement at all — a rock-solid frame won't flex under normal hand pressure. If you feel give at one or two points but not others, that tells you specifically where the fixing has failed, which is useful information for whoever diagnoses it.

Watch the external silicone line too. A hairline crack that runs along the joint at the exact point where you feel movement is a strong secondary confirmation, because sealant doesn't crack on its own — it cracks because something behind it is moving.

Why packers matter so much

A composite door frame is rarely a perfect match for the opening it sits in — there's almost always a small gap that needs bridging at each fixing point. Packers (small rigid shims) fill that gap so the fixing screw clamps the frame firmly against solid material rather than being left to flex across an air gap. Skip the packers, or use compressible packing that isn't rigid enough, and the fixing looks secure on the day but gives under repeated load.

This is one of the most common shortcuts we find on rushed or DIY installs, because it's invisible once the frame is in place — you can't see whether packers were used without removing trim or, in some cases, the frame itself.

Cornwall-specific fixing challenges

Granite openings are unforgiving for fixings — granite is extremely hard, which means it's tempting for a rushed installer to fix into surrounding mortar joints instead, and mortar simply doesn't hold a fixing anywhere near as well as the stone itself. Cob openings present the opposite problem: cob is relatively soft and can crumble around a fixing point that isn't set correctly, giving a false sense of security on the day that fails within a year or two.

In both cases, the right approach is usually specialist masonry fixings rated for the specific substrate, set at a slightly increased frequency compared with a standard brick or block opening, and always backed with rigid packers.

The re-fixing process

In the majority of cases, a moving frame can be corrected without removing the door slab or the frame itself. We identify each weak fixing point, drill through at the correct angle, insert appropriately sized packers, and drive a longer or better-rated fixing through into sound masonry, finishing with a matching cover cap or make-good where needed. This is typically a two-to-three hour job depending on how many points need attention.

Where a fixing point has damaged the surrounding masonry — cracked brick, crumbled cob, perished mortar — that substrate needs repairing before a new fixing will hold, which adds time but is still generally cheaper and less disruptive than a full frame removal.

When a full refit becomes necessary

If the frame has been flexing for a long time before being addressed, repeated movement can distort the frame section itself slightly, or cause enough sealant and structural damage around the opening that re-fixing won't restore a properly weathertight, secure result. In that situation a full removal and refit, while more expensive, is the only way to guarantee the frame will actually stay put. Your rights when a frame move traces back to installation

A frame that moves after fitting — as opposed to one that's always been solid and has recently started to flex — points squarely at how it was fixed, not a fault in the door itself. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, services have to be performed with reasonable care and skill, and a frame that wasn't packed and fixed into sound masonry falls short of that regardless of how the door slab performs.

Document the movement with a video showing the flex under hand pressure, note when it started, and put a written complaint to the original installer before commissioning remedial work yourself where possible — it strengthens any later claim for costs if they decline to act.

Insurance-backed guarantees and frame movement claims

If your original installer provided a genuine insurance-backed guarantee, frame movement caused by faulty fixing is exactly the kind of structural defect it should cover, even if the installer has since gone out of business. Locate the policy document and contact the underwriter directly rather than assuming the guarantee died with the company — that's the entire point of it being insurance-backed rather than a company promise.

If you can't find the paperwork, check whether the door was registered with a warranty scheme at the time of installation; many require registration within 30 days, so a late claim can be refused on process grounds alone rather than on the merits of the defect.

What correcting frame movement costs

Re-fixing a frame that flexes but hasn't distorted typically costs £120 to £220 — additional fixings and packers through to sound masonry, with the door slab staying hung throughout. Where movement has gone on long enough to distort the frame itself, or has pulled fixing points out of the wall entirely, a full removal and refit is needed at £450 to £850.

The gap between these two prices is exactly why catching movement early matters: a frame checked and re-fixed in its first year rarely needs anything more than the cheaper option, while one left flexing through two or three winters usually needs the expensive one.

What a correctly fixed frame looks like on the day

Fixings should run through the frame, through a packer at every point, and into masonry you could hang a picture from — not render, not a crumbling timber sub-frame, not just the cavity behind. On exposed coastal walls we typically use more fixing points than a standard inland spec calls for, because wind loading on a door-sized panel is considerably higher than most homeowners expect.

A properly fixed frame shows zero detectable movement when you push firmly near any hinge or the keep side with the door open — not 'barely moves', but none at all.

A decision framework for frame movement

Slight flex under firm pressure with no visible gap change: monitor and book a re-fix within a few weeks. Visible gap change between seasons, or flex you can see rather than just feel: book a re-fix promptly, ideally before winter. Any point where the frame has visibly pulled away from the wall, or fixings are visible working loose: treat as urgent, since continued movement at that stage risks damaging the wall structure itself, not just the door.
