Millbrook and the Rame Peninsula: doors built for a genuinely exposed coastline
By Cornwall Composite Doors · 9 August 1969 · 4 min read
Millbrook's position on the Rame Peninsula, facing Whitsand Bay and Plymouth Sound, means a front door has to earn its keep against real weather.
A peninsula village with two very different aspects
Millbrook sits on the Rame Peninsula between the sheltered Tamar estuary and the wide open sweep of Whitsand Bay, and the two sides of the village experience genuinely different conditions. Properties on the estuary side, looking towards Torpoint and Plymouth, get a milder, more humid climate; those higher up towards Whitsand and Mount Edgcumbe take the full force of south-westerly Atlantic gales with very little in the way. PL10 housing spans old creek-side cottages, mid-century bungalows and newer estate development, and we adjust the door specification depending on which side of the village a property sits.
Why timber and older uPVC doors don't last here
We've replaced a lot of doors in Millbrook that failed years before they should have simply because they weren't specified for genuinely exposed coastal use. Timber doors on the Whitsand-facing side swell, crack and need repainting on a cycle that most homeowners find exhausting; older uPVC doors from the 1990s and early 2000s tend to have sagged on their hinges and lost their seal integrity, letting driven rain track in around the frame. A composite door with a solid engineered core and a full-length reinforced hinge side doesn't suffer either problem.
Hardware and threshold specification
For anything on the exposed, higher ground towards Whitsand Bay we specify stainless steel hinges and hardware and a drained, low-threshold sill as standard, matched with a multi-point locking system rated for coastal use. On the more sheltered estuary side towards the ferry, a standard specification performs perfectly well, and we'll advise honestly at survey rather than over-specifying everyone the same way.
Covering the wider Rame Peninsula
Millbrook is part of a wider round that takes in Torpoint, Saltash and Looe, so surveys and fitting slots here run on the same schedule as the rest of the peninsula rather than needing a special trip. If you're anywhere between Millbrook, Kingsand and Cawsand, mention it when booking and we'll factor the peninsula roads into the fitting day.
