Fitting a composite door into a Mevagissey conservation-area cottage

Mevagissey's tightly packed harbour cottages sit in a conservation area, so getting the door right means balancing character with modern performance.
A working harbour town, not a museum piece
Mevagissey's harbour is still a working fishing port, and the cottages that pack tightly around Fore Street, Church Street and the quay were built for fishermen's families, not for wide door openings or generous porches. PL26 properties here are often narrow-fronted with a door set almost directly onto the pavement, taking the full force of weather blown straight off the harbour with no front garden or wall to break it. That combination of tight openings, listed or conservation-area status on many streets, and genuine exposure makes Mevagissey one of the more particular fitting jobs we do on this stretch of coast.
Working within the conservation area
Much of central Mevagissey sits within a conservation area, and while composite doors aren't automatically restricted the way replacement windows sometimes are, we always recommend checking with Cornwall Council's conservation team before ordering if your cottage is listed or in a sensitive terrace. In practice, a cottage-style composite door with a traditional panel layout, chrome or pewter furniture and a heritage colour like Chartwell Green, cream or black is very rarely a problem, because it reads as a like-for-like replacement rather than a modernisation.
Templating for genuinely old, non-standard openings
Many Mevagissey door openings were cut for doors that don't match any modern standard size, having been altered and re-altered over a couple of centuries. We template every opening individually here rather than working from nominal sizes, and it's common to need a bespoke frame rather than a stock one. It takes a little longer to quote accurately, but it avoids the gap-filling and awkward packing that a stock-size door would otherwise need.
