The Most Secure Front Doors for Cornwall Homes: Why Composite Doors Lead the Way
14 July 2026
Front-door security matters as much in Cornwall as anywhere else. Here's why composite doors with PAS24 hardware are the most secure practical choice.
Cornwall has lower overall burglary rates than most of the UK, but the offences that do happen concentrate heavily on doors that are easy to defeat — old timber doors with mortice locks, cheap uPVC panels and any door with a euro cylinder that lacks anti-snap protection. Here's how composite doors compare on the security metrics that actually matter, and how to specify one that meets police-approved Secured by Design standards.
WHY DOORS ARE THE WEAK POINT
The Home Office's crime survey data shows that around 70 percent of residential burglaries in England and Wales enter through a door, and of those, the majority use one of three techniques: lock snapping (breaking a euro cylinder in seconds with a mole-grip), kick-in (defeating a poorly-fitted lock keep) or slip attack (using a card to release a night latch). Windows account for most of the rest. Getting the front door right closes off the largest single attack surface on a house.
WHAT PAS24:2022 CERTIFICATION MEANS
PAS24:2022 is the UK standard for enhanced security performance of doorsets and windows. A door certified to PAS24 has been tested against a defined set of physical attacks — manipulation, cutting, drilling, sawing, snapping and forced impact — and has resisted them for a specified duration. It's the standard insurers reference, the standard Secured by Design references, and the standard any Cornwall front door replacement should meet in 2026.
THE THREE-STAR ANTI-SNAP CYLINDER
The single most important component in any modern front door is the euro cylinder. A three-star (TS007:2014 3-star) cylinder is snap-resistant, drill-resistant, pick-resistant and bump-resistant to the standard that police security teams recognise. Anything less — a one-star or unrated cylinder — can be snapped with a mole-grip in under 20 seconds.
Composite doors ship with a three-star cylinder as standard from every reputable UK manufacturer.
MULTI-POINT LOCKING
A modern composite door engages hooks, deadbolts and a compression latch at multiple points up the door edge, all driven by lifting the handle and turning the key. This distributes forced-entry load across the entire frame rather than concentrating it at one lock position, and it makes kick-in attacks practically impossible.
REINFORCED FRAME AND KEEPS
A composite door frame in a proper installation is packed at the fixings, fixed at 400-600 mm centres with proper turbo screws through the reinforcement, and fitted with steel-reinforced keeps around the lock points. This is the layer of security most people never see and most substandard installers skip.
LAMINATED GLAZING
Any glass panel in a front door should be laminated (a plastic interlayer between two glass panes). Laminated glass doesn't shatter cleanly when broken — it holds together, defeats reach-through attacks and slows down anyone trying to smash a panel to reach the internal handle.
HINGES
Composite door hinges are three-part, reinforced, and adjustable. Anti-lift protrusions on the fixed side of the hinge prevent the door being levered off its hinge pins even if those pins are removed.
WHY COMPOSITE OVER UPVC OR TIMBER
A uPVC panel can be defeated by cutting or by removing the beading and lifting the glass panel — the panel infills aren't structural. A traditional timber door with a mortice lock and Yale night latch is easily defeated by slip attacks and kick-in. A composite door with the specification described above has none of these weaknesses.
WHAT TO SPECIFY
Composite slab from a reputable UK manufacturer. PAS24:2022 doorset certification. Three-star anti-snap cylinder. Multi-point locking mechanism. Laminated glazing in any glass panel. Reinforced hinges. Steel-reinforced lock keeps. Marine-grade stainless hardware for coastal postcodes.
Any Cornwall installer worth using will supply all of the above as standard on any door over £1,600 installed. If they can't, or they hedge on any component, choose a different installer.
