How Long Do Composite Doors Last? Lifespan, Maintenance & Guarantees Explained

14 July 2026

Composite doors are marketed as long-lasting, but how long do they actually last in Cornwall? Real lifespan expectations, maintenance and guarantees explained.

A quality composite door installed in Cornwall today should give you 25-30 years of reliable service. That number assumes a properly specified doorset, professional installation and the routine maintenance described below. Here's what actually determines lifespan — and what shortens it. REAL-WORLD LIFESPAN Independent longitudinal data on composite door lifespan is limited because the product has only been in mass use since the mid-2000s. What we see across our own installations in Cornwall — the earliest of which are now approaching 20 years old — is that a well-installed premium composite door reaches 20 years with essentially no cosmetic or functional degradation. Manufacturer estimates of 30-35 years are credible for the slab itself. In practice, hardware (locks, hinges, letter plates, handles) is the first thing to wear, typically at year 15-20, and can be replaced for £200-£400 without disturbing the slab or frame. WHAT SHORTENS LIFESPAN IN CORNWALL Salt-air corrosion of standard zinc-alloy hardware is the number one cause of premature failure on coastal properties. Specifying marine-grade stainless steel hardware from the outset eliminates this — the upgrade is worth every penny of the £120-£200 it typically costs. Poor installation is the second cause. A frame that isn't fully packed, or a threshold that isn't sealed properly, allows moisture ingress at the corners. Water then wicks into the slab edge and the frame joints, causing swelling, seal failure and eventual sagging. Cheap unbranded slabs (typically under £1,400 installed) often use lower-density polymer cores and thinner GRP skins. These can fade, warp or delaminate within 8-10 years. Stick to Solidor, Endurance, Rockdoor or equivalently-graded UK-manufactured slabs. MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE Every 6 months: wipe the slab with warm soapy water, rinse and dry. Wipe the frame and threshold. Check that weather seals sit fully against the slab when closed. Every 12 months: spray a small amount of silicone-based lubricant on the hinge pins, the multi-point lock keeps, and the cylinder itself. Check that the door closes onto the compression seal without needing a shove — if it does, the hinges need adjusting. Every 3-5 years: replace the weather seals around the frame if they show cracking. Kit is £30-£50 and takes an hour. GUARANTEES Standard on a mid-range composite door: 10-year manufacturer guarantee on the slab, 5-year guarantee on hardware, plus your installer's own guarantee on the fitting workmanship (typically 10 years from reputable Cornwall installers). Premium ranges: some manufacturers offer 15-year slab guarantees, and marine-grade hardware sometimes carries a lifetime warranty against corrosion. WHAT THE GUARANTEE ACTUALLY COVERS Read it. Most manufacturer guarantees cover slab delamination, colour fade beyond a specified Delta-E value, and defects in manufacture. Installation-related failures are your installer's responsibility, not the manufacturer's — which is why the installer's own workmanship guarantee matters as much as the door's. Colour fade is normally covered only if it exceeds a defined threshold. Minor mellowing over a decade is expected and not a defect. WHEN TO REPLACE VS REPAIR Hardware failure at year 15-20: repair. Slab damage from impact: usually repair (replace slab, keep frame). Frame failure: full replacement is normally more economical than a frame-only swap. Full delamination or colour failure inside the guarantee period: manufacturer claim. Buy well, install well, maintain the way described above, and 25 years is a fair expectation for a composite front door in Cornwall.
